Everton Football Club – Goodison Park

Before we start to bring you the latest round up of news here a short introduction to the club.

Brief History of Everton Football Club

Everton FC was founded in 1878 and was then called St. Domingo Football Club; after the St. Domingo Methodist Church in the district the team played. The name changed to Everton Football Club when people who lived outside the parish of St. Domingo wished to join the football club.

Everton FC joined the Football League in 1888 and is one of the Football Leagues founding members. Since the football leagues inception Everton have owned the record for the team that has stayed in the top division for the most amount of seasons with 107 and the most amount of top division games played.

Over the years Everton Football Club has had many successes such as winning the Football League on 9 occasions, the FA cup on numerous occasions and winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1985.

Everton play at Goodison Park which has a seating capacity of 40,158 supporters. When Everton first started playing they didn’t play at  as they played their matches at Anfield.

Anfield is the home of Liverpool FC today but Everton played there until the club fell out with the director who owned the Anfield ground, it was at this point they moved to Goodison Park in 1892.

Everton Football Club has many nicknames that it is known by such as “The Blues” and “The Peoples Club” but the nickname it is most well known for is “The Toffees”.

It is believed that the nickname “The Toffees” came about as there was a business close to the Goodison Park ground that Everton play on called Mother Noblett’s Toffee Shop. This toffee shop made some sweets called Everton mints and even had girls going round the outside of the pitch on match days selling toffees and other sweets to supporters.

Visiting Goodison Park – opening times and tour ticket prices

If you wish to visit Goodison Park then you are in luck. Except for days when matches are playing Goodison Park is open for stadium tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11am and 1pm and Sundays at 11am.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to see behind the scenes of a football club to see what its like for the players in the changing rooms and walking down the tunnel on a match day? A tour of Goodison Park will really bring the atmosphere of what it must be like for Everton players to life.

To have a stadium tour you must book in advance and the prices are as follows

Adults – £8.50
Children under 16 – £5.00
Family Ticket – £20.00 (2 Adults and 2 under 16s)

For Everton supporters there is also an Everton Football Club shop where you can buy many wonderful gifts and replica kits of the team.

Goodison Park also has many function rooms and lounges that are great for corporate events, birthdays and wedding celebrations.

How to get to Goodison Park

By car: there are various routes that can be taken dependant on your location when arriving in Liverpool. The easiest route is to take the M62 to Liverpool and turn off onto the A5058. After travelling on the A5058 for just under 5 miles you will arrive at a roundabout signposted for the A59, at this roundabout take the County Road.

After turning onto County Road following the road for just under a mile and turn onto Spellow Lane then onto Goodison Road where you will see the Stadium on your right hand side.

By public transport: Goodison Park can be found on the following bus services that depart from Queen Square Bus Station: 1, 2, 19, 20, 311, 345 and 350. If you are travelling by rail the closest railway station is Lime Street which is not far from the bus station.

For those that don’t mind walking Goodison Park is located three miles away from Liverpool City Centre.
