1) Learn to speak the wedding dress speak!
It does help if you know a little of the terminology for describing your perfect wedding dress if only to avoid a ‘Pretty Woman’ moment when you first step into a wedding dress shop.
The Silhouette is the term described for the outlined shape of the wedding dress. These are split into eight different styles referred to as A-line, Ball Gown, Ballerina, Bustle Back, Empire, Princess, Sheath and Slip.
Most of the names speak for themselves however if you are not sure it worth doing your research.
2) Choose the right wedding dress to suit the occasion.
If you are planning on holding your wedding outside it may be worth investigating a wedding dress style that will lift the hem of the dress off the floor. The last thing you want is to be dragging half of a garden around with you for the rest of the day once the service is over.
Consider what time of year you are holding your wedding.
Do you need a light weight dress to stay comfortable all day during a summer wedding or will you need to be better covered to keep from having to add to your wedding outfit if you are getting married in the cooler months?
3) Have you chosen a wedding dress style that suits you and not just your fantasy?
You may have had that perfect wedding dress in mind since you were a little girl but now you are all grown up and planning your special day will that wedding gown style be right for you?
It is all too easy to gaze at the wedding magazines and float around the wedding shows building your list for your perfect wedding.
When it comes to choosing your wedding dress it is absolutely worthwhile getting an outside opinion. Looking at yourself in a mirror is all well and good but you can’t truly see what the wedding dress design looks like on you from all angles. The first you will know is when your wedding photographs arrive and you may be unhappy with the overall effect – we all know that dreaded holiday snap feeling!
You could ask a friend or your wedding dress fitter to take some photographs for you then you can take them away and have a really good look before making your decision.
4) Does your wedding dress truly and honestly fit?
What? You might say. No really. This is important!
It can be tempting to have your dress fitted just that bit tighter if you want to look slimmer on your wedding day but don’t risk it. Whilst you may be of the opinion that with no pain there is no gain and that to look spectacular in your eyes you need that waist cinched in a couple more inches this is best avoided.
Your wedding day will be beautiful, your guests and groom will think you look stunning no matter what. Remember it will be a long day and you want to keep smiling and enjoying yourself during everything from arriving at the church to dancing the night away with your beau and even the relative’s children.
So agreed – beauty is on the agenda but comfort must also be close to the top of the list.
5) Off-the-peg or Specially Made? Brand New or Second Hand?
The answer to this question might simply be answered by the budget you have available for your wedding dress.
However, even on a tight budget you may be determined to have a brand new wedding dress. If this is the case consider off-the-peg. Then customise. This way you will still get the wedding dress you desire at a fraction of the cost and hassle.
Second hand does not mean compromising on style. You can acquire a wedding dress of superb quality, unique and delectable design and may even choose to search out the perfect vintage style you have always dreamed of – and remember – it has only been worn once!
