Everton Football into Europe – News and Results

A round up of the last ten days at Goodison Park, as Everton FC start the Europa League Group Stage and hope to kick-start their Premier League season.
A tribunal on 7th September saw Everton being ordered to pay Leeds United a compensation fee, initially set at £600,000, for Luke Garbutt.

Everton academy boss Ray Hall has described the 16-year old defender as an “excellent prospect”.

LFC Chairman Ken Bates had accused Everton of “nicking” the player.

The fee could rise to over £1.5m, with appearances, honours and international caps all included in the financial add-ons.

Everton FC had originally offered £200,000 to Leeds, but Bates was unhappy with the transfer and contacted both the Football and Premier Leagues.

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said: “We are very comfortable we have played by the rules and we are very comfortable the club elected to go to a tribunal to establish a fair value.”

The teenaged left-back from Harrogate is currently part of the Toffee’s Under-18 set-up, he has reserve team experience so far this season as well as England Under-17 honours.

Fulham FC 2 – 1 Everton FC
(Konchesky 57,    (Cahill 33)
Duff 79)

An exciting match between the two Europa League teams sees the home side claim all the points.

Tim Cahill’s header on the half-hour gave the Toffees a deserved half-time lead after a scrappy start.

Ten minutes into the second half however, Paul Konchesky’s deflected shot got Fulham equal in a spirited display from both teams.

Phil Neville was carried off, which led to some confusion in the Everton squad, and Fulham capitalised with a Damien Duff shot from outside the box putting them ahead with ten minutes left.

Although Everton went all out, Fulham were able to hold on and secure the win.

Boss David Moyes said afterwards: “The first half was quite tight, we might have shaded it a bit but credit to Fulham they did much better in the second half and we dropped.
“They were chasing a goal but we were poor, we allowed them the initiative.
“We couldn’t do an awful lot about the deflection but what was disappointing was the free-kick that we gave away.”

The following day, 14th September, Everton Football Club’s official website reported that Phil Neville has damaged knee ligaments and could face ‘a lengthy lay-off’.

The Blues skipper was stretchered from the field during the away defeat at Craven Cottage.

Head Physiotherapist Mick Rathbone said on the site: “An MRI scan on Monday morning has confirmed our fears and it has revealed that Phil has damaged ligaments at the back of his knee,

“He will now rest it for 48 hours to allow the swelling to go down and he will then see a specialist in London before a decision is made on how best to manage the injury.”

Manager David Moyes had been unhappy with the challenge on Neville by Fulham’s Dickson Etuhu.

September 17th, Match Day 1 of the new Europa League campaign and the trial of extra officials by the goal-line, and David Moyes admitted that he was largely ‘in the dark about it’.
“Certainly no-one has come in and showed us how it will work so we’re a little bit in the dark about it,” he said in the pre-match press conference.

“All we do know is that there’ll be two extra assistants either side of the goals. If it works, great, hopefully it will.

“I don’t expect a full briefing. I think we’ll all just be having a go at it and see how it works.”

Meanwhile, Everton completed the signing of free agent Lucas Neill one a one-year contract.
The 31-year old defender, an Australian international, left West Ham in the summer.

With Phil Neville sidelined, the signing is much-needed, as boss Moyes commented:
“I’m pleased. It is very rare you can get a player after the window closes but fortunately he was out of contract and we were able to get him here.”

Neill will not be able to play in the Europa League, but is eligible to make a start against Blackburn this weekend, one of his former teams.

Everton FC 4 – 0 AEK Athens

(Yobo 10,
Distin 17,
Pienaar 37,
Jo 82)

Everton roared to succes in their opening Europa League Group I encounter, taking apart AEK Athens with a scinillating first-half display.
A fantastic shot from Stephen Pienaar from outside the box meant Everton FC were three-nil up at half-time.

Ten minutes after the restart AEK had Carlos Araujo red carded after the defender had kicked out at Distin.
Jo sealed a great display late on for the home side’s fourth, a victory that was soured by Louis Saha getting a red in stoppage time; Saha had raised his hand to defender Juanfran, and the referee had no hesitation to give him his marching orders.

Everton were clearly better than the visitors, and the Europa League trial of extra officials could arguably helped in the first two goals, both centering around corners, when the players in the box had to be aware of an extra pair of eyes upon them.

However, after the match David Moyes spoke out to question the effectiveness of the goalline officials in light of Saha’s sending off.
“It was a ridiculous kick the boy [Juanfran] has on Louis,” said Moyes.
“It is amazing [the officials] see the small arm but don’t see the big kick – even with the extra officials.”

In Group I’s other game, Benfica beat BATE 2 – 0, which means Everton lead the group on goal difference.

The Toffees took an early lead with a header from Joseph Yobo and Sylvain Distin got his debut goal to make it two-nil inside twenty minutes.

Everton’s next match is on Sunday 20th September against Blackburn Rovers, at Goodison Park.
