Things To Love About Birkenhead Park
(Not Just The Elephants!)
Birkenhead Park has a lot to offer to both locals and visitors alike. This wonderful urban park, with two large lakes, open pastures and woodland, features a variety of facilities.
Opened on 5th April 1847, Birkenhead Park is widely acknowledged as the first civic park to be publically-funded in Britain. An inspiration for the famous US landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, Birkenhead Park served as inspiration for Central Park in New York, with its alleys, open meadows, lakes and park buildings.
Olmstead once wrote of Birkenhead Park: “…[in] America there was nothing to be thought of as comparable with this People’s Garden”.
The beauty of Birkenhead Park and its unique design was named as a conservation area in 1977 and in 1995 English Heritage labelled the Park as a Grade 1 Listed Landscape.
Birkenhead Park has dedicated staff, including a ranger, security agents and ground maintenance teams. This approach helps the popularity of the park, as the staff organizes a full program of events and walks for all visitors, young and old.
