Warrington band Exile Parade will be finishing their debut album in May at Motor Musuem Studios, Liverpool; it will include tracks produced by Owen Morris (Oasis/The Verve/The View) and will be released worldwide later in the year through various Indie labels.

Before they head into the studio and play The Masque the band will be playing to over 70,000 people live and a TV audience of 150m when they play the main stage at the Zebra Music Festival in Chengdu, China on May 3. The band were invited to play the festival after building a strong online fanbase through Chinese social media site Douban and press features in the Beijing Times; the band will also be playing shows Beijing and Shanghai.

In the UK Exile Parade have recently supported The Enemy in Manchester and have shows coming up at The Masque, Liverpool (May 14), Alan McGees Geasy Lips Clubnight and The Sellindge Music Festival. Jim Gellaty of XFM / BBC Scotland commented on his radio show after watching a live show in Glasgow…”they reminded me of a totally punked-up Rolling Stones”.

Signed to large Dutch Indie label Suburban Records for Europe the band have also played in Europe’s leading venues including Paradiso, Amsterdam for London Calling sharing the stage with The Ting Tings, Mystery Jets and The Rascals. After playing the Beeckestijn Festival Dutch newspaper Haarlem Dagblad wrote “The band sounded very tight with a huge sound; typically a band where you can say in a couple of years time just like Radiohead when they played the Beeckestijn Festival in 1993 – I was there!”

Riders of the Ruby Moon present Liverpool’s Alternative Election Night Party…
All Mouth and No Ballot

Riders of the Ruby Moon http://ridersoftherubymoon.org/ invite the people of Liverpool to Party with Conviction as they bring a unique election night cabaret to the Static Gallery on Thursday 6th May. The All Mouth And No Ballot Party promises to be an all night long movable feast of scandalous drama, sleaze, live music, songs, satire, vegetables, original films, mud-slinging, dancing and that’s just the election results!

This theatrical treat features an election themed cabaret performance from some of Liverpool’s finest artists. Listen to Bourgeois Pig as he sings deliriously about the night he broke the Bank of Monte Carlo, meet the Politician and his Wife as they lean on the garden gate of sleaze, hear radical reworkings of classic songs; crooners, tooners and Dada beat poets. Smile with Knitting Woman at the Needlework Box of Free Speech and watch irreverent films faithfully sampling all your favourite dastardly politicians. As if that wasn’t enough, ticket holders can also dance the night away with an all night DJ and election themed board games including tiddlywinks and snakes and ladders. Throughout the evening, the cabaret will stop and we will go live to the big screen whenever someone’s about to lose their marginals.

Come along and mark your ballot paper and post on the Wall of Free Expression… will it be hung or will it be swung? This will be a totally unique and interactive theatrical experience… who knows how it will end? Make sure you’re there to find out!

Liverpool Sound City have confirmed the return of one of the favourite off-shoots to the upcoming international festival bringing together the city’s two biggest passions football and music, The John Peel World Cup will be held on Wednesday 19th May at the state-of-the-art football facilities at Powerleague in the Everton district of the city.

Twelve five-a-side football teams made up of celebrities, bands and city dwellers battle it out to take home the treasured trophy that is dedicated to one of Liverpool’s favourite sons. It carries a long tradition of the celebrity football tournaments that was initiated by Phil Hayes (The Picket) and Peter Hooton (The Farm), a competitive tournament that is not for the faint hearted.

Peter Hooton from The Farm quotes “The John Peel World Cup is a fantastic way to enjoy John’s great loves of football and music and the city. The tournament is great fun but it’s also for a top cause and everyone takes it seriously once they’re on the pitch. It’s certainly a laugh watching bands take a lump out of each other.”

The legendary Wirral born Radio One DJ and music broadcaster John Peel never hid his hometown pride. A passionate supporter of Liverpool FC and homegrown bands and music, the radio presenter often discussed football matters on air, gathering admiration and criticism in equal measures. Sadly the broadcaster died in 2004, but he is set to be remembered with the third annual John Peel World Cup, as ever all proceeds from the football tournament will go to the British Heart Foundation http://www.bhf.org.uk/ which is the nominated charity for John’s Family.

Over the past few years we have had teams supporting the charity from The Farm, The Wombats, The Zutons, Deltasonic Records, BBC 6 Music, Clash, Universal Records, Domino Records, NME, Cream, Liverpool Music Week and Elevator Studios.

The Picket are amongst the first to sign up a team to compete this year. The John Peel events will take place on the opening day of the music festival with the footballing action takes place during the day and an evening event at o2 Academy with the winners collecting their medals live onstage and bathing in pink Champagne at the John Peel Celebration night with special guests The Fall.

A competition will also be announced shortly for a local team to take part in the tournament, watch this space.

Directed by award winning Liverpool director Brian Percival (Much Ado About Nothing, The Old Curiosity Shop, Gracie!) written by Julie Rutterford (Teachers, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and starring Liverpool actor Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Neverland), A BOY CALLED DAD tells the story of Robbie – a 14 year old boy who has just become a father.
Abandoned by his father, Joe, Robbie snatches his baby son and goes on the run. As Joe joins the search for Robbie, they are each forced to face up to the past and what it really means to be a father.

A BOY CALLED DAD is an emotionally stirring but ultimately uplifting ‘coming of age’ drama which marks the acting debut of Kyle Ward and the feature film debut of award-winning director Brian Percival and producers Michael Knowles and Stacey Murray. It received its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2009 where it was nominated for the Michael Powell award with its young lead actor, Kyle Ward winning a Trailblazer award. The film was also voted an audience favourite at the festival.

Actor Ian Hart said “The opportunity to work on Merseyside is one I always relish and I think this film captures some of my feelings about the area. Liverpool is a great city but most people don’t realise that it is also surrounded by some outstandingly beautiful countryside and beaches”.

Clapperboard UK Director Maureen Sinclair said “I’m delighted that we are screening A BOY CALLED DAD at the Plaza Cinema in Crosby, my home town. Ian Hart is a great supporter of Clapperboard and I’ve known the film’s director, writer and producer for many years and I’m very proud of all their achievements.”

Pride in Liverpool – What’s it all About?

The aim of Pride in Liverpool (PIL) is to increase Liverpudlians knowledge of their city and to engage our community to build respect for their neighbourhood and city as a whole. We will create both an encyclopaedia, and a memory and myths book as a legacy for future generations.

The Pride in Liverpool website records the gathered information and will will remain as a living document. You can get involved by starting your own project, or by sharing your thoughts on the forum.

LIVERPOOL COMMUNITIES AND BUSINESSES UNITE

The exhibition takes place at St George’s Hall, starts on the Monday 5th July 10.00 to 4.00 p.m and continues until the Thursday 8th July.

This is for the project groups throughout Liverpool to display their work and for the businesses to support this event. Our aim is to cover business and project groups from every part of Liverpool L1 to L39.

Friday is a The Friday is a Celebration day – full of fun and entertainment. This is for all the people who have been involved throughout the week and for invited guests.

Zappa Plays Zappa features Dweezil Zappa, Frank’s eldest son, on lead guitar accompanied by a host of hand-picked young musical talents. Dweezil and his band bring his father’s musical legacy to life on stage, the only official act to do so since Frank Zappa’s death in 1993. Zappa Plays Zappa will perform a career spanning selection of Zappa’s work, including ‘Bobby Brown (Goes Down)’, ‘Peaches en Regalia’ and ‘Willy the Pimp’.

This Liverpool performance sees Dweezil Zappa follow in his father’s footsteps, Frank Zappa played Liverpool at the height of his career in the early 70s, at Mountford Hall in 1970 and Liverpool Stadium in 1973.

Dweezil said, “I’m so excited to bring Zappa Plays Zappa to Liverpool forty years after my Dad played there. We’re bringing my father’s music to new generations of music lovers, as well as long-standing Zappa fans.”

Dweezil and co have been playing the music of Frank Zappa to audiences worldwide since 2006, receiving rave reviews as they go. In 2009, Zappa Plays Zappa were awarded a Grammy award for best rock instrumental performance for their performance of “Peaches en Regalia”.

This show joins the Liverpool Summer Pops line-up as the concluding show of the Summer Rocks weekend to run from Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th July 2010. Pops promoter Chas Cole said “We’re lining up some huge rock acts for our first ever Summer Rocks weekend. Zappa Plays Zappa will be a fantastic show, returning Frank Zappa’s legacy to Liverpool in a unique and original format.” More acts are to be confirmed for the Summer Rocks weekend and the Summer Pops Festival in the coming weeks.

Acts already confirmed for The Liverpool Summer Pops Festival 2010 include Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Status Quo, Jools Holland, Rod Stewart and The Australian Pink Floyd Show. Beatles Day returns on Saturday 10th July, culminating in Beatles Day – The Concert at the Liverpool Echo Arena. There is also a sporting first for the Summer Pops this year with the Mersey Masters football tournament at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Sunday 4th July.
