A BOY CALLED DAD is an emotionally stirring but ultimately uplifting ‘coming of age’ drama which marks the acting debut of Kyle Ward and the feature film debut of award-winning director Brian Percival and producers Michael Knowles and Stacey Murray. It received its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2009 where it was nominated for the Michael Powell award with its young lead actor, Kyle Ward winning a Trailblazer award. The film was also voted an audience favourite at the festival.

Actor Ian Hart said “The opportunity to work on Merseyside is one I always relish and I think this film captures some of my feelings about the area. Liverpool is a great city but most people don’t realise that it is also surrounded by some outstandingly beautiful countryside and beaches”.

All four acts are graduating this year from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, http://www.lipa.ac.uk/ and this event is the perfect way for us all to celebrate with them.

Zoë Nicol played for us back in October 2009 and was such a hit that we just had to have her back. Tonight Zoë will be performing with her 6 piece female folk group Zoë Nicol and the Worry Dolls who have been closely working together for her final year at LIPA. You can expect a colorful and vibrant evening, as Zoe and the Worry Dolls tell stories of transvestites, crimes, dreams, strength, courage, life and friends. The debut album These Are The Stories will be avaliable for purchase from the merchandise table.

Rosie Jones played a solo set for us in October, stepping in for a musician who was ill. She impressed us so much that we’ve invited her back this time to play with her band Rosie Jones and the Mystery Machine.

Rachael Wright is a performer we’ve been trying to book for a while but she’s always been in demand to play gigs right around the country. We’re delighted that Rachael is able to play a solo acoustic set for us, and we’re really looking forward to it.

Tina Refsnes, another talented performer from Liverpool’s ever-growing Norwegian community, completes the line-up on the night.

• Game@Mocha returns to the Mocha Lounge on Sir Thomas Street in a new regular 2nd and last Friday of the month slot.
• There’s a new open mic night at The Beer House inside the Novas CUC on Greenlake Street. It takes place every Sunday from 8.00pm and welcomes musicians, magicians, comedians, poets, actors, and everything in-between (their words, not ours!).
• The Cellar Club has recently moved and set up home at Novas CUC. It’s now a weekly Saturday night event from 9.00pm to 2.00am, featuring bands (including a fair number of acoustic ones) and top DJs. • The guys over at Rash Records have started a brand new evening of acoustic music at 07 Cafe Bar on Mount Pleasant. It’s taking place on what’s fast becoming a popular date for new events, the last Thursday of every month.
• Following in the musical footsteps of a certain leaf-flavoured Liverpool tea shop Brew Tea Bar on Bold Street has started it’s own acoustic music night inventively called Brewbar And Custard. • The bad news is that we heard about the Musicians’ Gallery in the month that the six month project ended. It involved mainly acoustic, unplugged sessions inside the Walker Art Gallery. Legendary star plays the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on 29 April 2010 Legendary American poet, musician and author, Gil Scott-Heron has announced a rare UK show, with a date at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall opening this year’s Liverpool Sound City music festival.

Scott-Heron’s music featuring a unique fusion of jazz, blues and soul music as well as his famous politically influenced lyrics and concern with social issues, has led to him being hailed alongside contemporaries like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield as a true legend of seventies soul and funk.

Albums like Pieces of a Man and Winter in America proved to be a vital influence on hip hop and his most well known song, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised continues to be a key song in the rap canon.

2010 has seen Gil Scott-Heron release the acclaimed new album, I’m New Here, his first in sixteen years. Released on XL Recordings it was proclaimed “The hottest record in the world” by Radio One DJ, Zane Low.

Liverpool Sound City Director, Dave Pichilingi said: “We are absolutely delighted to be bringing such a legend to Liverpool and it is wonderful to be able to work with the Philharmonic Hall on such a special event.
