BOLD ST FESTIVAL – SUNDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2010
10am-6pm

Bold St…what does it mean to you? Bohemian, cultural, independent, quirky, surprising, creative, historic, cosmopolitan, freethinking, diverse? Cafes, shops, bars, conversation, street life – a world away from clone city blandness.

From fair-trade to serious fun; books, bags and boots; coffee, clothes and crafts; and the best hairdressers in town! If you can’t find it here, you probably don’t need it.

For the third year running, Bold St Village Traders will be hosting the Bold St Festival – an all-day extravaganza of colour, energy, culture and fun.

With such a wide range of independent shops and businesses you’re sure to find something to enjoy, whether it’s food-tasting at the international shops & restaurants, literary shenanigans at the bookshops, face-painting clowns or chill-out music in the caffs, or just by taking advantage of the many special offers the traders will tempt you with.

Last year we had the Brazilian samba band, the Black-E’s co-operative games, tai chi demos, open-air stalls, stilt-walkers, ghost tours, a giant collective street poem and a tango salon!

This year even more is planned.

There are rumours of goings-on at the Bombed-Out Church, refugee musicians and an Eritrean Coffee Ceremony!

So if you dare to be Bold in September, come and join in the most vibrant, cutting edge, avant-garde Festival of them all!

With their usual mix of the beautifully observed and the utterly barmy, Ben and Xander will be performing a parade of characters from their extensive dressing-up box and wig-store, including the street-talking WWII chav pilots; Brabbins and Fyffe, the filthy alter-egos of Flanders and Swann; Jilted Jim, dumped at the altar but still on his honeymoon; Terry Devlin, the royal correspondent who really KNOWS the royals; Dennis Lincoln-Park, the accident-prone culture buff; the Frank Dad; and so many more…

Mathew Street Fringe this weekend

This August bank holiday weekend sees the return of the Mathew Street Festival, and with it comes its kid brother the Mathew Street Fringe.

Whereas the main outdoor festival is known for its vast array of cover bands, the Fringe showcases the current music scene. Now, that’s not to say that today’s original bands don’t get a look in on the main programme, with Williamson Square hosting the Original Bands stage on Sunday, compered by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Dave Monks [The Pool] and featuring the likes of The Bo Weevils, Ragz, and The Sixteen Tonnes.

There are also a number of indoor venues offering great original music too, particularly O’Neills at the bottom of Wood Street where John O’Connell and guests have three gigs over three days.

But Keiser Thiefs and Stayed As Quo aside, it’s the Fringe where you’ll find some fantastic music featuring the cream of the music scene from Liverpool and beyond, with plenty of acoustic treats in the mix. Unlike the main festival, the Fringe isn’t programmed centrally and it’s left to the Liverpool venues which support music all year round to plan their own lineups.

The venues taking part are:-

3345 Parr Street

Aloha, Colquitt Street

Bad Format Social Club, Trueman Street

The Bluecoat

Bumper, Hardman Street

The Grapes, Roscoe Street

Heebie Jeebies, Seel Street

The Krazyhouse, Wood Street

Leaf Tea Shop & Bar, Parliament Street

Mello Mello, Slater Street

O2 Academy, Hotham Street

The Picket, Jordan Street

St Luke’s bombed out church, Leece Street

Studio 2, Parr Street

What’s Cooking, Albert Dock

The Zanzibar, Seel Street

For a full list of all the events at these venues, visit mathewstreetfestival.org/whats_on/?festivalStrandId=2

Although there are too many events to list on the Liverpool Acoustic website (hence the link above) there are a few that jumped out at us, mainly because some of the people involved sent us some lovely emails asking us to give them a mention. So, in date order…

Free face painting, sports, giant board games, entertainment, giveaways and more!

To celebrate summer, Tesco Mobile is touring the country with a fun-filled, free family fete.

The first Tesco Mobile ‘Summer Days’ event will take place from 10am until 4pm on Saturday 28th August at Sefton Park and Croxteth Country Park on Sunday 29th August.

The outdoor events are free for anyone to attend and Tesco Mobile is laying on a whole host of entertainment, games and giveaways that will suit everyone in the family.

The Tesco Mobile fetes aim to bring families and friends together to enjoy the outdoors with some good old fashioned fun and games in the park, whilst also offering free sporting goodies and the chance to win a top of the range mobile phone.

White picket fences, colourful bunting and classic sea side deck chairs will create that authentic summer fete atmosphere.

A range of games and activities will be running throughout the day, including colourful face-painting and the chance to work with circus entertainers to learn a variety of circus skills, from spinning plates, juggling balls, to learning how to walk on stilts. To get everyone up and active, there will also be a range of sports including mini football for the little ones, volleyball, badminton and short tennis – offering something to suit every age and level.

There will also be an appearance from those much-loved English family favourites, Punch & Judy, who will be performing shows throughout the day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

To make sure that parents and adults are not left out, Tesco Mobile will be providing giant board games including those childhood classics such as Connect Four, Giant Jenga and Draughts, that will get the young and the old having fun and enjoying the English sunshine.

Visitors will also get the chance to win a brand new, sleek LG Viewty GM360 mobile phone from Tesco Mobile. All they have to do is pick up one of the Tesco Mobile Frisbees at the Summer Days event and before having a throw of it, text the number on the Frisbee, to find out immediately if they’re a winner – it’s that simple!

Go Straight to TESCO MOBILE >>

Tesco Mobile’s Summer Days fete will offer something for everyone, leaving no excuse not to get involved and enjoy some fun and laughter in both Sefton Park and Croxteth Country Park this summer.
