Thursday 11th March sees the first meeting of the brand new Liverpool Guitar Society.

It’s taking place in the Cornerstone building at Liverpool Hope’s Everton campus, from 7.00pm to 10.00pm.

The society exists to promote classical guitar in Merseyside; members can get support and encouragement, and there will be opportunities to play solo and in ensembles.

Cost will be £2 from the second meeting onwards, and more details can be found at liverpoolguitar.org

Also tonight, Thursday 11th March, there’s another new event starting.

Acoustic @ The Head of Steam pub on Lime Street starts at 8.30pm and will be a mix of invited guests and open mic.

It’s starting as a one-off event, but if it’s successful then it will become weekly. So why not get along and support it? Go on, it’s free!

‘NORTHERNNET CONNECTS SOUND CITY’
Tuesday 16th March 2010: Broadcast live from SxSW in Texas.

International Media figureheads in discussion, to be broadcast live via NorthernNet from the World’s largest film, music and interactive event, SxSW.

Following its successful launch event with Cultural Commissar Phil Redmond at FACT, Liverpool, the ‘NorthernNet Connects Sound City’ project is delighted to announce the second in a series of groundbreaking and innovative events, which will bring the southern state of Texas to the north of England with a series of panels broadcast live from SxSW music, film and interactive festival.

International media, TV and interactive figureheads from companies including Getty Images (USA), INTEL (USA), BBC Worldwide/Commercial (UK), BSKYB (UK), Yahoo Music (USA), Endemol (UK), The Orchard (UK) and the Consumer Electronics Association, will take part in panels and virtual one to one networking sessions with Northern SMEs.  The panels will be broadcast live to the NorthernNet website www.northernnet.co.uk on Tuesday 16th March from 6.30pm.  The SxSW Interactive Day virtual networking and panel sessions: “Content, New Technologies and the Consumer Experience Event” will be hosted by UK Trade and Investment, and digital entertainment consultants TAG Strategic, will enable Northern SMEs not attending SxSW in person to ‘meet’ with and learn from US based companies they might not otherwise have access to.

The virtual networking sessions will take place at NorthernNet Media Access Bureaux positioned at MediaCityUK – Salford, FACT – Liverpool, The Round Foundry – Leeds and Tyneside Cinema – Newcastle, with the companies involved being linked in for virtual meetings with the US attendees of the Interactive Day at SxSW via a satellite link through NorthernNet.

The first panel, titled ‘Is Content King?  How great interactive content can define the relationship between media platforms, brands and the consumer’ – will discuss how creative businesses can define the value of their content to the platforms or brands that want to acquire it.  This will be followed by ‘Punk Attitude: How can we learn from the attitude of musicians/ artists’ will explore how adopting a ‘punk attitude’ can help an entrepreneur, executive or business – the panels and keynote will be hosted and available to view exclusively on the NorthernNet website www.northernnet.co.uk Companies can email their questions to the panellists directly to northernnet@weareboss.co.uk

Paul Kane, Head of Innovation at BSkyB leads a team delivering innovative new products and services for Sky.  Paul is passionate about emerging technologies and how they can be used to deliver compelling, engaging and exciting entertainment experiences to consumers.   A 16-year veteran of the media and entertainment industry, Jeffrey Bronikowski most recently was Senior Vice President of Global Digital Initiatives FOR UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP.  In February 2010, Bronikowski will start his new role as Head of Music for YAHOO! Music.  Scott Cohen is primarily responsible for label acquisition in western European territories for the market leading digital aggregator, The Orchard. In addition to his responsibilities at The Orchard, he manages Danish indie rock sensation, The Raveonettes.

Renowned Welsh dance company Earthfall return to unitytheatre with their 20th anniversary production GIG on Fri 19 Mar at 8pm. National Dance Company Wales Drift into Liverpool Playhouse on Fri 19 and Sat 20 Mar at 7.30pm.  This dazzling show features New works from leading figures Itzik Galili and Andonis Foniadakis. It’s St Patrick’s Day party time again! Wednesday, March 17th, will see people from all over the UK heading down to pubs and bars for a mid week party to raise a pint of the beloved black stuff in celebration of St Patrick’s Day. Thousands of pub owners will be decorating their interiors with those famous black, white & green decorations and gearing up for the ultimate St Patrick’s Day party of the new decade.

Black Velvet Recipe and History

Ingredients:
Flute of Champagne
Flute of GUINNESS Extra Stout
Serves 1 (1.3 units)


GUINNESS mixed fifty fifty with Champagne. Legend has it that this famous drink was invented in 1861 at Brook’s Club in London. Prince Albert had died, everyone was in mourning, and the story goes that the steward at the club, overcome with the emotion of the occasion, ordered that even the champagne should be put into mourning, and proceeded to mix it with GUINNESS. The taste was so delicious, Black Velvet became extremely popular.

Anna Brown’s Beef, Onion & Guinness Pie

For this recipe be sure to use shin beef as it is well suited to the long slow cooking process. Stewing steak tends to disintegrate, as opposed to shin beef which has gelatinous fibres running through it.

1.5Kg Shin Beef cut into 2″ cubes
2 medium onions peeled and sliced onions
1 tablespoon flour seasoned with salt and pepper
1 pt Guinness
1 pt beef stock
1 pack ready roll puff pastry



Method
Place the cubed shin beef and the onion in a casserole dish and coat with the seasoned flour. Pour in the Guinness and the stock and bring to simmer gently on the hob. Cover with a tightly fitting lid and place in an oven preheated to 140 Celsius for at least 2 to 3 hours until beef is tender.

Cook pastry as per the pack instructions, cut into individual portions about 5″ by 5″ square. Serve with creamy mashed potatoes and spring greens.

*Hold the glass with the Guinness harp facing you and your thumb over the harp
*Never look down. Look at the horizon and bring the glass to your mouth, not your mouth to the glass
*Take a sip, breaking the seal of the head of your pint
*Enjoy the Guinness cream moustache left on the top of your lip
*Each time you take a drink from the pint, hold the glass in the same position and repeat above, letting the liquid flow underneath the head of the pint
*Expect to experience the malty sweetness at the front of your mouth, the roasted flavour at the side and the distinctive Guinness bitterness at the back
