Africa Oyé is the UK’s largest celebration of African music and culture and takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength-to-strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. Africa Oyé has continued to grow and in 2010 attracted an audience of over 50,000 people. Even more are expected to attend the 20th annual Africa Oyé Festival in 2011.

With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world. The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. It has played host to artists from nations right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and The Caribbean with Salsa, Soca, and Reggae always popular additions to the festivities.

But Africa Oyé is about more than music. Over 60 stalls selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond will again be present at the Oyé village. Long time supporter ‘News From Nowhere’, one of the UK’s premier stockists of African music, will have merchandise from all the performing artists and much more on sale. It’s a great opportunity to not only take in some of the best roots music around, but take some home with you too.

Africa Oyé has gone from strength to strength over the last twenty years. The event held over 50,000 visitors and generated over £1.3m in extra income for the city in 2010 – an unprecedented success for the festival. As a result, Africa Oyé has had to take steps to ensure the future success of the festival and consider the interests of all visitors to the event. For the first time in the festival’s 20 year history, Africa Oyé 2011 will be enclosed to assist with the security and policing of the event. There will also be an increased number of toilets, a bigger and better Oyé village, and a larger main stage. In addition, despite cuts to the budgets of Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, both organisations have confirmed that they will be contributing funding towards Africa Oyé again this year.

Africa Oyé remains a registered charity and any profits raised from admission to the festival will be re-invested into the festival for 2012. Thank you all for your continuing support and help in making Africa Oyé what it has become.

“For over five years Matt has photographed Liverpool’s most noted fashion designers and their collections. He has created fashion imagery which has been published everywhere from the Liverpool Echo to Harper’s Bazaar. This curious insight into the world of fashion outside of a capital city shows how a small industry can still make a big impact.”

This hands on exhibition includes amazing collection pieces from some of the best Liverpool designers and lots of new unseen photographs. Plus It’s free to visit.

The exhibition will be open from 11am-5pm each day and is in association with the Liverpool Design Festival…

The Liverpool Design Festival is a 10 day celebration of creativity that embraces all types of design in venues across the city. Opening on 18th November, the Long Night, with Matthew Moore’s lamp installation at the Hope Street Hotel there will be films about design at METAL (Edge Hill), Crosby Plaza and the Scandinavian Church, exhibitions and design displays at Bold Street Coffee, News From Nowhere, Tate Liverpool shop, Community College Arts Centre (Myrtle Street), Bluecoat and Utility. There will also be seminars, talks, open studios and a guided architectural tour of Liverpool One.

The Liverpool Design Show 20 & 21 November in St George’s Hall will showcase the work of over 70 designer/makers working in furniture, fashion, lighting, ceramics, jewellery, soft furnishing and decorative art. This will be an exclusive opportunity to meet designers and buy unique products or gifts.

The Liverpool Design Festival is organised by Design Initiative an industry body and charity based in Liverpool and Manchester. We are pleased to announce the first acts for this year Liverpool Music Week festival, which runs from the 29th October through November.

Liverpool Music Week began in 2003 and over the last 8 years has gone onto become a nationally recognised event and highlight of the music calendar. Resulting in Liverpool Music Week becoming the UK’s biggest indoor winter music festival, a musical showcase that features big name acts and gi…ves a performance platform for fresh emerging talent, a number of which have gone on to reach nationwide success. Last years event attracted a record breaking 65,000 people to the city and is a combination of free and ticketed shows. The fifth HOPE STREET FEAST will be held on Sunday 19th September 2010

The Hope Street Quarter will be closed to traffic and open to merriment from 5am until 8pm. As well as the huge Farmers’ Market running the length of Hope Street, and intermingled with stalls promoting Wealth and Hell Being (provided by the street theatre geniuses that are Hope Street Ltd) there will be musical performances including ~

* the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko
* the very wonderful voice of Najma Akhtar with Gary Lucas on guitar (yes, THE Gary Lucas of Beefheart’s Magic Band and of Jeff Buckley albums)
* Realword Records’ latest gem Syriana, including a live soundtrack to the films of Nico Piazza
* A sampler session for THE IRISH SEA SESSIONS which are convening later in the autumn, including Ian Prowse, Terry Coyne, Eimar McGowan
* John O’Connell
* Mike Neary
* Alex Berger

and plenty more yet to be announced.

- The Can’t Cook Domes, and the usual craft fair, will be at Blackburne House
- the Liverpool Philharmonic Open Day will include hands-on music making sessions in the Rodewald Suite — the LIPA stage will be at the top of Mount Street
- Roscoe Street will host a beer festival around the Roscoe Head pub
- there will be an art market on the Metropolitan Cathedral Piazza
- and there’ll be great food on offer throughout the site, from Hope Street’s many fine eateries and visiting stallholders, with dining areas on Mount Street, Falkner Street, Myrtle Street and close to the Everyman Bistro.

This is only a taste of what’s on the menu!

The full programme and timings will only be available on the day for £1 from stewards: please help support the event by buying a programme – everything else, apart from what you choose to eat and drink – is free.

Bold St…what does it mean to you? Bohemian, cultural, independent, quirky, surprising, creative, historic, cosmopolitan, freethinking, diverse? Cafes, shops, bars, conversation, street life – a world away from clone city blandness.

From fair-trade to serious fun; books, bags and boots; coffee, clothes and crafts; and the best hairdressers in town! If you can’t find it here, you probably don’t need it.

For the third year running, Bold St Village Traders will be hosting the Bold St Festival – an all-day extravaganza of colour, energy, culture and fun.

With such a wide range of independent shops and businesses you’re sure to find something to enjoy, whether it’s food-tasting at the international shops & restaurants, literary shenanigans at the bookshops, face-painting clowns or chill-out music in the caffs, or just by taking advantage of the many special offers the traders will tempt you with.

Last year we had the Brazilian samba band, the Black-E’s co-operative games, tai chi demos, open-air stalls, stilt-walkers, ghost tours, a giant collective street poem and a tango salon!

This year even more is planned.

There are rumours of goings-on at the Bombed-Out Church, refugee musicians and an Eritrean Coffee Ceremony!

So if you dare to be Bold in September, come and join in the most vibrant, cutting edge, avant-garde Festival of them all!

Liverpool’s Annual Festival

Slavery Remembrance Day

The Slavery Remembrance Day festival commemorates the lives of millions of enslaved Africans, but also celebrates the resistance, rebellion and revolution that ended the trans-atlantic slave trade.

The festival programme will include live music, community showcases, cultural crafts and a traditional African libation ceremony.

Market stalls will also be selling traditional West African and Caribbean food.

This event is suitable for visitors of all ages.

This is a FREE drop-in event, no need to book!
