Everyone’s favourite clubbing institution Cream celebrates its coming of age birthday on Saturday 9th October as it turns 18 years young!

There are few who can equal the unparalleled success that Cream has achieved over the last 18 years. Beginning life in October 1992 as a 400 capacity club night located in a Liverpool backstreet, none of those who were there at the beginning could have envisaged Cream would be where it is today…. Its success is down to many things, not least its ability to evolve with the ever changing music scene but Cream’s fierce loyalty to its fans, and continuing dedication to deliver cutting edge line ups, production and that ‘unique’ Cream atmosphere, all of these factors and their attention to details is why Cream remains at the top of its game.

For this landmark ‘coming of age’ birthday celebration Cream returns to its spiritual home Nation….the place where it all began, with an all star line up of Cream legends and breakthrough artistes. First up taking control of the Main Room is German über jock and Cream Ibiza resident Paul van Dyk, DJ’s don’t get much bigger and for this very special event Paul will be playing an exclusive 3 hour set. The Courtyard will be hosted by man of the moment Laidback Luke, following his roadblock performances in Ibiza, it’s easy to see why he’s become the breakthrough artiste of the Summer, whilst the Annexe will be headed up by Funkagenda. Other acts rolling into town for the party of the year include genius DJ/Producer Afrojack, an artiste whose popularity has hit the heady heights of superstardom over the last year, following a series of collaborations with international artistes like David Guetta, Chuckie, Laidback Luke and Steve Angello, deadmau5 label mates Chris Lake and Michael Woods, Adam Sheridan and our very own superstar DJ’s the Cream Residents Andy Mac, Gareth Wyn, Anthony Probyn, Jemmy and Rob Harnetty.

So raise your glass to Cream, probably the best dancefloor in the world!

About Mellowtone

“rigidly adhering to a high level of quality control” The Fly

Regular evenings of live music and DJs in a variety of the most intimate venues across and around Liverpool. You can find rootsy country blues on the same bill as intricate and delicate folk, or perhaps a band playing an stripped down set – it’s a laid back affair, and though we’re predominately acoustic in outlook, our focus is on showcasing the best music around. We’re also quite partial to plugging things in, and between the live music our resident DJs, Richie Vegas and Jonnie O’Hare – Beaten Tracks – spin a laid back selection of grooves spanning funk, soul, blues, jazz, afrobeat, hiphop, reggae and anything else they fancy. Our resident compere – Monkey – takes care of the introductions.
The spiritual home of Mellowtone is the View Two gallery, the intimate artspace perched high above Mathew Street, but we often gather at different locations around the city.
From delivering the very best acts from the city’s thriving music scene to our ever expanding band of faithful followers as well as bringing performers from further afield for our pleasure and yours, Mellowtone’s dreamers and schemers are on a nomadic quest to spread good times through intimate soirees with a heartbeat of live acoustic music.

In addition to awesome support acts Moa, Sir Toots Brown, A/V Maria and Lee Mcpherson, the show is an eclectic fusion of live music, mind bending projected visuals, a giant singing head, an army of robots and much, much more!

(Bella Union / The Czars)

plus support TBA

Everyone has a favorite band or singer they reckon is subject to criminal neglect. That JOHN GRANT’s effortlessly rich, expansive baritone, couched in typically heartbreaking, lush melody, hasn’t found a wider audience indeed drives his fans to consider a crime. But no longer. Because Grant’s first solo album, with backing band treatment from MIDLAKE, Queen of Denmark, following three undervalued studio albums (and one similar covers compilation) fronting The Czars, is so undeniably great that the world will surely listen.

Keeping true to their origins as a spontaneous composition ensemble, they kick ideas up and down the stage in a torrent of Decks, Horns, Double Bass, Drums and Electronic Effects. No digital samplers, no guitars or keyboards and no safety net as the arrangements are reinvented on the spot and the roles of solo and backing instruments change at the blink of an eye to any of the nine members. The powerful sound has also reverberated on dance floors, televisions, radios and films worldwide.

http://www.myspace.com/theapplesmusic

Joining The Apples will be The Hat Band – one of the UKs finest underground groove collectives. Their unique sound is an intoxicating fusion of dub reggae, afro-latin beats, funk and sublime vocals guaranteed to exhilirate mind, soul and body. The Hat Band have been firm favourites on the Liverpool scene for much of the past decade, with every single gig played to a packed dancefloor and rapturous reception.

And We The Undersigned – (aka WtU!) a nine-piece Liverpool based band/collective, inspired by Reggae, Funk, Folk, Hip-Hop and Rock vibes. They have been playing together for around a year, with a couple of small festivals and numerous well received local gigs under their belts. WtU have supported the likes of A.S.M. feat. 6ixToys Horns, Chris Helme and ROX. They are set apart from the majority of local players by their massive five-piece brass section, named the BlowBax. They play politically motivated songs, requesting that people read some history and think for themselves. They are lovers of strong melody and harmony, true love and true democracy. They are attempting to revolutionize the planet through the medium of dance. If you dance, you move, and if you move, you are free. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. Wiggle fo’ yo’ lives!

ONLY UK DATE FOR CHICAGO’S JOEL HALL DANCERS AFTER 20 YEAR GAP.

Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) and the Merseyside Dance Promoters Network (MDPN) are delighted to announce that the world renowned Joel Hall Dancers, last seen in Liverpool over 20 years ago, will play their only UK date of 2010 at the Floral Pavilion, New Brighton on Tue 7 & Wed 8 September.

Following Matthew Bourne’s phenomenal first visit to Liverpool in February, this spectacular performance from one of America’s top Jazz Dance companies promises to be the highlight of the second half of LEAP 2010 year of dance.

The Joel Hall Dancers are celebrated for their joyous blend of jazz, ballet, modern and “street” dance techniques. In their thirty six-year history as a professional Chicago-based dance ensemble, the company have performed all over the world, presenting works by Joel Hall and many nationally and internationally recognized choreographers, achieving a noted reputation as a quintessential American Contemporary Urban Jazz Ballet Company: sophisticated yet accessible.

During the past three decades, Joel Hall has achieved an international reputation for his dance company along with acclaim as a choreographer. Similarly to what Matthew Bourne has done for British Ballet, Joel Hall has done for Chicago Jazz Dance having created his own innovative Chicago urban jazz style of movement. Hall’s unique dance style expresses a rich vocabulary of movement embracing both classical and modern styles.

In addition to the many works created for his own company, Hall has choreographed for Maria Tallchief’s Chicago City Ballet, Chicago Opera Theatre, the Zenon Dance Company, Ballet Tennessee and Eisenhower Dance in Detroit. In addition, he was choreographer for Goldie Hawn’s now classic film Wildcats. Joel Hall is the recipient of numerous awards and honours including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Dance World Congress, a Katherine Dunham Award, a Lifetime Service Award from the Chicago Dance and Music Alliance, the African American Arts Black Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement for his choreography for ‘In The Shadow of Nina Simone’.

You can see an exert of one of The Joel Hall Dancer’s pieces by clicking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezhPuIgk6VQ

This world class performance will feature some of Joel Hall’s most exciting and memorable choreography including breathtaking pieces such as the award winning ‘In the Shadow of Nina Simone,’ a tribute to the legendary performer and songwriter who was Nina Simone and ‘El Gato Negro’ featuring a house mix of music by artists such as CeCe Penniston, Zig Zag, Nightmares on Wax and Black Sheep.

In the Shadow of Nina Simone is a collaborative work by Joel Hall and Paul Sanasardo. This wonderful work came as a result of a conversation between two old friends both choreographers that admired the world of the ‘High Priestess of Soul’.

Joel explains ‘I chose to thread Nina’s music to take our audience on a journey. Nina Simone seemed to be moving in a similar direction through her work with Verve records. Though her music remains timeless, she was a pioneer who was always searching for new ways to present her music. I chose the closing of In the Shadow of Nina Simone for this program because I know how much she is loved throughout the world.’

El Gato Negro by Joel Hall is a work inspired by club and house music. With Chicago being the global catalyst of house music, Joel developed a piece around the cool black cats that would dance the night away. Finally, dawn comes round and the patrons leave the club rolling out like tumbleweed. This piece is about the all night forays into the club world with the origins of house music at the Warehouse owned by DJ Frankie Knuckles.

“If you’ve never seen a jazz dance performance, you’re in for a real treat. If you’ve seen other companies perform jazz dance, then you’re in for a real awakening! Spend an evening with us and we guarantee to awaken the dancer in everyone’s soul. A performance by Joel Hall Dancers takes an audience to the edge of their seats, providing an artistic experience that moves the heart and soul.” Joel Hall.

Tickets are on sale now! Make sure you don’t miss out on this rare and exciting opportunity to see one of the world’s best professional Jazz Dance Companies perform exclusively on Merseyside.

Focusing on strengthening the dance sector, it nurtures and sustains a healthy dance culture, through contacts locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. A Regularly Funded Organisation of the Arts Council of England (ACE) and Liverpool City Council, MDI provides a strategic overview for dance development in the Merseyside region and beyond. MDI was established in 1993 following the success of the first LEAP Contemporary Dance Festival which took place in 1992. MDI was involved in developing the initial bid prior to the announcement of Liverpool’s success in being named European Capital of Culture 2008. MDI has worked in partnership with Liverpool Culture Company since 2003 to ensure the cultural impact of dance is fully represented in the city during 2008.

MDPN (Merseyside Dance Promoters Network) was initiated in 2009 by MDI to work with all of the venues in the region to increase the presentation of dance across Merseyside offering more frequent opportunities to see the best of dance and to build new audiences and an increased and quality programme of all types of dance remains in the city. Liverpool Empire, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, The Bluecoat, Unity Theatre, Floral Pavilion, Rose Theatre, Black-E and Southport Arts Centre are all part of the network.

About 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing

The 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing aims to engage individuals and groups in thought and action to improve health and wellbeing, by integrating the work of public, third and private sectors at a neighbourhood level.

It provides an opportunity to not only communicate the importance of health and wellbeing to the people of Liverpool, but also to promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and present a wide range of accessible activities to get involved in.

This year is about raising the importance of good health and wellbeing for everyone in Liverpool and the City Region – public bodies, businesses, communities and individuals. The framework being used to structure 2010 is the Five Ways to Wellbeing – an evidence based equivalent to 5 fruit and vegetables a day. The evidence shows that if we build actions from the Five Ways into our day, then we could add 7.5 years to life.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing are:

- Connect

- Be Active

- Take Notice

- Keep Learning

- Give

SOMEWHERE UNDER THE RAINBOW…

LIVERPOOL’S FIRST EVER LGB&T PRIDE ANNOUNCES GLITTERING MAIN STAGE LINE UP

‘Roll Up, Roll Up’ boys and girls! The Ring Mistress of the Rainbow Circus’ is cracking her whip and the acts are flocking in! A glittering line up of local and national stars has been announced to play the Main Stage at the first ever official Liverpool Pride festival, which takes place in and around Liverpool’s Dale St on Saturday 7th August.

Headlining the day are Gay Icon and Coronation St star Adam Rickitt, who will perform his brand new single as well as an updated version of his 1999 hit ‘Breathe Again’, and Club Diva Rozalla, who will perform her club land smash ‘Everybody’s Free’ in addition to some of her other hits including ‘Are You Ready To Fly’ and ‘I Love Music’. Also sure to wow the crowds is Happy Mondays and X-Factor star Rowetta, who will be joined by the Liverpool based AJ Productions dance troupe to perform a number of classic tunes in the way that only this soul diva can.

Rowetta said ‘I can’t wait to perform at the first ever Liverpool Pride. I have loved singing at all the Prides over the years, and always wanted Liverpool to have their own. I love Liverpool and can’t wait to sing, celebrate and party with everyone.’

Liverpool’s Britain’s Got Talent stars, MD Productions, kick start the main stage action with their anti-bullying dance number “They don’t really know about us”. Other local acts taking part include Tyler Menser who will sing the Michael Jackson classic ‘Man in the Mirror,’ before local songstress Chelcee Grimes (currently working with Lady GaGa and Beyoncé’s producers ) and Mark Thompson (who has worked with Tinchy Stryder) perform some of their own pop tunes. The city’s own vogue supremacists House of Suarez bring a spectacular 12 minute taste of what can be expected at the ‘JUSTICE’ Vogue Ball, to be held in October.

Artistic Director, Darren Suarez said; ‘House of Suarez is ecstatic to be part of Liverpool Pride’s celebrations. House of Suarez has performed nationally in prides across the country, it’s so great that we can finally perform at our own city’s pride festival.

Adding a touch of sparkle to the main stage is Liverpool drag artiste Doreen Kum Kwik (aka Darren Edge) who, in honour of Liverpool Pride, has set up her own Glee Club with Hope and Harmony choir and the Singing Hands choir for deaf people. She’ll be belting out some of your all time favourite camp tunes.

Other highlighted performers include one of the UK’s biggest ‘all gay’ bands, Cubstars, and singer Nikki Belle, who will be along to rock out her two club-land Number 1 hit singles, ‘Teardrops’ and ‘Sex Shooter’. Juice FM and Garlands DJ’s Dave Wheelan and Anton Powers will also be on hand throughout the day to keep Pride-goers entertained with some of their infamous DJ sets. Revellers can also expect to see the one and only Lady Cyan pop up throughout the day as one of the compares, cracking the whip and keeping all of the acts in tow.

Towards the end of the day, we strike up the Batala and Republic of Swing Samba Bands to play us into the balloon release vigil. The Vigil will take place from 7.30pm with Gerry Potter reciting his beautiful and moving poem “We Travel” before Natasha Hamilton, accompanied by Liverpool’s drag artistes, sings the Atomic Kitten hit ‘Whole Again’. A rainbow sea of balloons will be released from the stage to commemorate those who have fought for equality and in honour of friends of Liverpool’s LGB&T community.

Councillor Louise Baldock, Liverpool’s Assistant Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Liverpool’s Pride Festival will be a vibrant celebration of our city’s great diversity. It will bring together people of all ages and backgrounds to promote real respect and appreciation of difference.”

Plenty of exciting acts are lined up to play on the Cabaret and Acoustic stages, to be unveiled shortly. The first ever Liverpool Pride festival is sure to be one to be remembered! Make sure you’re there to be a part of it!

About Liverpool Pride

Liverpool Pride 2010 is the first official Liverpool Pride festival by and for the Liverpool lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) communities. It is a two day event with a one day festival on the 7 August 2010 and a ‘Chilled Out Sunday’ on 8 August with cultural and sports events spread throughout the city.

Before choosing a date, organisers took a number of factors into consideration; such as other pride events, the Liverpool event calendar and key dates for the LGB&T community. LGB&T members of the community were consulted on a potential date. The consensus was that people wanted festival date to mean something important and asked that it reflect the anniversary of Michael Causer’s death, 2 August 2010.

Liverpool Pride is funded through contributions made from our delivery partners as well through advertising and sponsorship. We also receive a significant amount of ‘in-kind’ support from organisations and volunteers.

Liverpool Pride does not make a profit; all funds raised go to the delivery of the festival. Any surplus we make will be put towards the development of the next festival. We are also looking at how we can help support charities that share our values.

About Citysafe – Key Delivery partner of Liverpool Pride 2010

Citysafe is the Community Safety Partnership for Liverpool. Partners include Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Health, Merseytravel, National Probation Service Merseyside, the universities, local businesses, community organisations and many others all working together to build safer communities. It also looks towards building more prosperous, cleaner, safer, stronger and sustainable communities in which every citizen will have a right to live in confidence without fear for personal safety or for the safety of others.

Another month, another bumper crop of new events. Fab, isn’t it? It’s great to see new event popping up, but they’ll only be successful if people support them, so why not get out of the house this summer and see what’s going on?

You say goodbye…

Not so much a ‘goodbye’ as a ‘see ya later’. Monday night’s regular Acoustic Live Lounge is taking a summer break, but is hoping to be back some time in September. We’ll let you know once we know.

And I say hello…

And not so much a ‘hello’ as a ‘hello again’. Game@Aruma is the new weekly acoustic open mic event run by Greedy Jesus after the event’s recent move from its former home in the Mocha Lounge. It takes place every Wednesday in what used to be Heart and Soul but is now Aruma on Mt Pleasant.

Game@Aruma also has a mixed band and acoustic night every Friday evening, so there are now two weekly events to look forward to.

Little Green Cafe Bar on Aigburgh Road has a new weekly acoustic event featuring booked acts every Thursday.

The Engine Rooms in Skelmersdale has an acoustic night called UNPLUGGED! (Skem is in Liverpool, right?) We’re not sure whether it’s a one off (or a two off since it’s down for July and August) but we’ll let you know as soon as it’s confirmed. Full details from www.engine-rooms.co.uk

Mike Drummond has contacted us to tell us about an open mic event called Keep It Live he hosts ever Monday night from 8pm at Envi on Fleet Street. Why not check it out and let us know what it’s like?

Ash Welsh has also contacted us to tell us about Stripped and Bare taking place every Wednesday in Heebie Jeebies basement bar from 9pm to 1am. The format is four booked acts with open mic and laid back tunes in between.

North End Writers is hosting a songwriting project this summer at Shrewsbury House Youth and Community Centre (the Shewsy) in Everton every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-3pm. She grew up in Norfolk, England – interspersed with numerous trips to Minnesota, where she soaked in the sounds of Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter and early blues and jazz. From the age of 4, Sarah composed songs on piano, and then at 15 began playing guitar. At 18, she moved to the USA, busking in the streets and playing gigs.

Sarah’s quartet features Gilad Atzmon on accordion, clarinet and sax, Enzo Zirilli on drums and Ben Bastin on double bass.

Beatles artist Sir Peter Blake, who famously designed the ‘Sgt Pepper’ albumn cover, will be attending a Charity Dinner on the evening of 11th June at Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral.

During the dinner there will also be a ‘question and answer session’ with Sir Peter Blake.

Regarded as the Godfather of British Pop Art, a meeting with the Beatles led to him famously designing the album cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967.

Sir Peter Blake’s work crosses all generational divides, and inspires great respect from younger artists such as Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin. Knighted in 2002, an honorary doctor of the Royal College of Art, with his iconic work represented in major collections throughout the world, Sir Peter Blake truly is a grandee of British Art.

As part of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ London scene, Sir Peter’s close contact with the leading figures of popular culture served to heighten the nature of his work. In some respects we have all grown up with Sir Peter without really realising it, he has been at the heart of the British Art movement for over 50 years, his work is always varied, humorous, sometimes controversial, but never boring.
